Exceptional Video-supported Training for Speakers and Presenters

Linda Laible, Speech Coach

"The biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place"

--George Bernard Shaw

I provide customized, video-based training for speakers and presenters who find themselves in jobs and situations that require them to do effective public speaking. Whether it's rehearsing a single speech or addressing a comprehensive set of issues leading to better communication, the methods I have developed are effective and enjoyable. The results of my coaching lead to better speeches and better retention of your message. I invite you to read more about my methods and to read the comments of some of those I have helped.

An Enjoyable Experience

Many of my clients have learned to lean on PowerPoint or other visual aids to put across a message intended to inform and possibly move the members of an audience to action. While visual aids are convenient and have their place, your behavior on your feet can do far more to win the attention of your audience, increase audience retention of your message, and ultimately achieve your objectives.

As an emerging leader, manager, or executive, you are bound to find yourself in a position to deliver your own speech or one that someone else has written for you. It could be something short like an introduction, a persuasive speech, a long presentation, or possibly an interview for the mass media. Your success in any of these situations will depend on aspects of delivery you can master through a process of discovery and practice. With my coaching you will learn how to channel your nervous energy to overcome fear and increase the power of your delivery. With a series of practical video sessions, I will help you to size up your audience, establish a message objective or objectives, and structure your speech or presentation for the best possible outcome. You will be learning the skills and techniques you can turn to each time you need to speak before an audience.

Retention Matters
When you have learned more about speaking more effectively, you can expect to enjoy the challenge of speaking as you increase the power of your message.

Here's how my approach to practical, customized coaching works:

Step 1: We discuss your situation and set the training experience to meet your situation, abilities, and experience.

Step 2: We videotape a short extemporaneous speech on a subject you know very well.

Step 3. We then review the tape and discuss your performance in detail. Most clients enjoy this process and are surprised to discover a number of specific opportunities to make improvements. These are often little things that can have a big impact on the power of your message. Depending on what we see together, this exercise may be repeated.

Step 4: We review your current speech objectives and work together to edit the material you will be presenting to improve clarity and eliminate distractions for better impact.

Step 5: We videotape your presentation of the message at hand and work together to brush up the things that need work.

Coaching is Customized to Your Situation

My methods apply to making speeches, delivering sales presentations, preparing for Q and A sessions, or preparing for media appearances and interviews. Training sessions involve anywhere from two to four sessions running two to three hours each. The typical training program where a prepared speech is provided usually involves two, 3-hour sessions which can be conducted over a two-day period, consecutive days if desired. Scheduling is quite flexible to the client’s needs. The sessions can be conducted in your office conference facilities or another location where you are free of distractions and interruptions.

My approach to one-on-one coaching has been especially helpful to corporate executives, sales managers, marketing and advertising specialists, association leaders, and individuals with personal agendas where public speaking is essential.

Strategic Organization of Your Message
I can help you become an effective speaker and help you structure your message strategically for your best advantage with my practical, hands-on approach to customized speaker training. Preparing for Video or Television
When it comes to speaking to a camera most people are amateurs. I have found that pre-production coaching can make a big difference for spokespersons and their program producers.

Coaching deals with aspects of speaking in front of a camera and self-control that usually do not occur to speakers who may be used to presenting to audiences and the press. I work on speaking style and abbreviation in making important points to help hold interest in addition to the visual aspects of video and television appearances such as wardrobe, makeup, attitude, and eye contact. I stress the concept of communications intimacy reminding clients they are usually speaking to a small group of 1-to-3 people in a living room, classroom, or some small public place and not to people in a large auditorium or stadium. This awareness alone can relieve stress and influence speaking style.

I have first-hand experience with video and television coaching and I know how to prepare corporate and other amateur spokespersons to give more effective, persuasive, and concise presentations for video and television.

My work has included rehearsing amateur and celebrity talent to appear on a nationally syndicated television special, “Home Sweet Home – Still the American Dream” a yearly special produced and co-sponsored by the National Association of Realtors. Homeowners were interviewed in their homes about their perceived value of homeownership. Celebrities such as Marshall Loeb, then Editor of Fortune Magazine; Bob Vila, from the remodeling show; Kathy Lee Gifford of the Today Show, our moderator for one show; and others were all put through the pre-interview phase.

It really paid off in terms of production quality, getting their point across in a way that was interesting to the audience while satisfying the needs of the Association, and it made for an efficient production schedule saving time and money.
